I started my VA business when I was pregnant with my first child, in Dubai, away from family support. So when people ask whether you can really build a VA career around your children, I am not answering from theory. I am answering from the middle of it. The honest answer is yes, but not in the way Instagram makes it look.
This part is genuinely true. You choose your clients, your hours and your workload. You can build work around school runs, nap times and the appointments that used to cost you a holiday day. For a lot of parents, that flexibility is the whole reason to do this, and it is worth protecting fiercely.
It is not always calm and it is not always balanced. Some days the work happens in stolen half hours. Some weeks are a juggle and you feel like you are doing everything at seventy percent. That does not mean you are failing. It means you are a human being running a business and raising a child at the same time. Both are hard. Doing them together is harder.
The parents who make this sustainable are the ones who set boundaries early. Be honest with clients about your availability. Package your services so you are not tied to the clock. Protect the hours that belong to your family. Clients who are a good fit will respect it, and the ones who do not are not the clients you want anyway.
The reason I built this was so I did not have to pick between being present for my son and keeping my ambition. It is not always tidy, but it is possible, and I would not go back. If you want work that bends around your life instead of the other way round, this can genuinely be it.
